Reading and discussion from

The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison
Edited by John F. Callahan; Preface by Saul Bellow

These essays by the author of Invisible Man reflect on race, literature, music, and the experience and contradictions of living in America during the 20th century. In this discussion series, participants will explore musician and writer Ralph Ellison’s thoughts on American identity, Black culture, and art through his essays, interviews, and reviews. We will read excerpts from The Collected Essays of Ralph Ellison, as well as engage with supplemental works/media that relate to the program themes, including excerpts from Ellison’s Invisible Man, audio recordings, poetry, and other writings on the American Dream. Participants will also be encouraged to draw on/ share any previous knowledge and related content with the group. The group will meet for six weeks in-person and over Zoom. Our in-person dates are Nov.19 and Dec.17, where we will have a meal together. Those who can not make it in-person on those dates can still join us over Zoom for a virtual meal.
